On this day in 1945, ten days after his fifty-sixth birthday, Adolf Hitler killed himself and his wife of one day - Eva Braun - in his Berlin bunker as Soviet soldiers raised the flag of the USSR over the Reichstag. The end of the nightmare leading up to and through WWII was soon about to be over. (The Third Reich - what Hitler claimed to be a "Tausendjähriges Reich" - would finally crumble completely on May 8.)
